|
Serre l'Écoute
Québec (Canada), Serre l’Écoute is a vocal trio formed by
Gabrielle Bouthillier (voice, accordion), Liette Remon (voice,
fiddle), and Gabrielle’s father, Robert Bouthillier (voice).
They specialize in French and French-Canadian songs from oral
tradition. Their music traces the link between the traditions of
France and the Great Lakes region. Their fine harmonies,
instrumentation, and dance have placed them in demand at
festivals throughout North America and Europe. The trio has
released three CDs, including Chansons des bords du
Saint-Laurent, all dedicated to a maritime repertoire.

Tom Lewis
Winner of the inaugural "Trophée Stan Hugill," French fans dubbed
Tom "The Springsteen of Sea Chanteys." Old Songs Festival
(Altamont NY) has declared "This man knows the sea ... from the
bottom up!” and Living Tradition (UK) says "Although I always
knew he was good, I was not quite prepared for HOW good — 24
years in the British Royal Navy provides him with that vitally
authentic stance with which to tackle nautical song."
Tom's repertoire, from traditional shanties to songs fashioned
out of his own seafaring background, recruits his audience for a
voyage by turns reflective, dramatic, and humorous. Now residing
in Canada's Rocky Mountains, Tom was born in Northern Ireland
and that Celtic heritage is obvious in his clear, strong voice,
evoking quiet sorrow for a fisherman lost to the sea just as
honestly as it powers out a shanty "to be heard above the
gales." With songs that have become folk standards known and
sung wherever great choruses ring out, Tom accompanies himself
on button accordion and ukulele, but it's that powerful vocal
style and infectious humor — that quality of entertaining —which
keeps audiences coming back again ... and again.

Calico Jack
Janie
Meneely and Paul DiBlasi of Annapolis, Maryland, perform
together as the duo, Calico Jack; they bring their songs and
stories about the people, places, and traditions of the
Chesapeake Bay watershed and beyond. Janie has been writing
songs about the Bay for over 25 years chronicling her own
experiences and capturing the stories that she has heard over
time -- either as a little girl hanging around her father’s
boatyard, or during her professional stint as a journalist for
Chesapeake Bay Magazine. She grew up on the Annapolis waterfront
and can remember when the City Dock was jammed with workboats.
From local ghosts to tragic shipwrecks, her songs bring to life
some of the characters who add spice and color to Bay history.
In a rich baritone, Paul, formerly of the colorful Pyrates
Royale, adds a “waterman’s voice” to Janie’s ballads. Sometimes
saucy, sometimes serious, Calico Jack offers audiences a glimpse
of a rapidly disappearing way of life and invites them to join
in on the chorus.

Jerry Bryant
Jerry
Bryant is a native of the State of Maine who has performed folk
music all over the United States, accompanying himself on
guitar, concertina, banjo, and ukulele. His repertoire includes
hundreds of traditional and contemporary folk songs, with a
particular interest in the music of sailors. In a true, strong
baritone voice, Jerry lets the audience feel the emotional power
of century-old songs.
He has been featured at sea music festivals from coast to coast,
as well as in between. Jerry's original work, “The Ballad of
Harbo and Samuelsen” is one of the most popular ballads in
maritime music. He can also be heard on the Mystic Seaport CD
American Sea Chanteys, and several other recordings. His CD,
Roast Beef of Old England, is a collection of traditional songs
from the man-of-war days of the Royal Navy, and is a companion
to the seafaring novels of Patrick O’Brian; it was used in the
making of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the
World. Jerry also provided the music for the audio version of
the best-selling book In the Heart of the Sea, by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Members of the sea music workshop at the Old Town School have participated in the Chicago Maritime Festival since it was
founded. Some of those members have gone on to perform maritime music on a professional basis. One of the students,
Katharine Whisler, has succeeded in organizing a regular, on-going shanty sing – a first for the city of Chicago!
Through our 51-year history, what has set the Old Town School of Folk Music apart from other music teaching programs
has been our philosophy that music is for everyone. The founders wanted the School to be a place where, as founder
Frank Hamilton said, "teacher and student would be partners in learning." This philosophy is still in place and the
Old Town School continues to be a place that gives people the tools to make their own music. Young and old, beginners
and advanced players, people from various cultures and traditions come together to create music and learn from each other.
